Plant foods come directly from the energy of the sun and are full of vitamins, minerals and important enzymes. Yet these can all disappear in the cooking process.
Although fresh plant foods act as medicine for our body, we tend not to eat as much of them as our body really requires. The problem is that our taste buds that have been dulled by excess sugar and animal fats from cooked meals.
Kat Rempe Azanza from the wellness resort The Farm at San Benito in Lipa, Batangas suggests we get around the problem by juicing our plant food intake. “Juice cleansing, in effect, reboots your palate,” she says.
As a cleansing method, Kat prefers juicing over blending.
Juicing takes just the pure juice out of fruits and vegetables and excludes all pulp and fiber. The undiluted nutrient-dense juice is effectively gives the body a break and allows it to focus on digesting nutrients and detoxifying itself. It also encourages alkalinity in the blood and tissues to eliminate and reduce the presence of uric acid crystals, bacteria, yeast, mold and fungus that inhabit and grow in acidic environments.
Blending is another great way to pre-digest plant foods and make the most out of their nutritional benefits, useful when you are out and about and want to drink your juice quickly. Blending pushes a lot of air into the mixture which makes the juice oxidize quicker. Blended drinks also contain fiber that must be digested. If you are doing a juice fast and you want to detox your body, you should ideally not be giving your digestive system that added burden.
