Reduce Fat Intake to Prevent Colorectal Cancer
A diet that is high in fat is one of the biggest causes that can lead to the development of colorectal cancer. When we eat high amounts of fat we release more bile acids to help break down these fats. When bile acids reach the colon, large volumes result in the acid being converted to secondary bile acid. It is this secondary bile acid that can promote tumor growth, particularly in the cells that form the lining of the colon.
A high fat diet can also lead to weight gain, resulting in obesity. This is another factor that contributes to the development of a range of chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
Limit your intake of fat, particularly saturated fat found in processed foods and animal fats.
Increase Fiber Intake to Prevent Colorectal Cancer
A high fiber diet is already known to help reduce weight gain and protect against heart disease, but it can also help protect you from colorectal cancer. Fiber, particularly from whole grains, can help to cleanse the colon, flushing out free radicals and cancer-causing components that can linger in the walls of the colon, leading to the formation of abnormal cells.
Switch white bread to wholegrain, and increase your intake of lentils and pulses to optimize your fiber intake and help to protect your body from cancer.
All studies vary and whilst some studies show that certain types of food can reduce cancer risks, others are inconclusive.
