The link between oxygen levels and cancer is clear. When cells are newly formed, low levels of oxygen mean that cells cannot produce energy from oxygen. When these cells are forced to produce energy without oxygen, they can turn cancerous. Simply put, poor oxygenation means poor cellular health, which can lead to cancer.

What Causes Poor Oxygenation?

Poor oxygenation is caused by a build-up of carcinogens and other toxic substances in and around cells. This makes it harder for cells to breath using oxygen. As cellular oxygen levels drop, the respiratory enzymes that are found in normal healthy cells die.

How Does Poor Oxygenation Affect Cells?

On the death of respiratory enzymes, a cell becomes unable to produce all of its energy from oxygen. This means that, in order to survive, the cell is forced to produce at least some of its energy anaerobically (without oxygen) from sugar.  This process is the same as that used when we exercise; the oxygen supply to our muscles is insufficient to give them the energy to sprint, so it produces energy by fermenting sugar. Whilst aerobic respiration produces carbon dioxide, anaerobic respiration produces the by-products carbon monoxide and lactic acid. When we exercise the lactic acid builds up but is released when we stop exercising and oxygen supply is restored. The problem with cancer cells is that the oxygen supply is not restored.

Anaerobic respiration allows the cell to carry on living. However, although the cell has enough energy to live, it cannot produce enough energy to function like a normal cell. This means that it loses communication with the rest of the body, as well as its ability to function normally.

Without the knowledge or ability to function normally, the cells can continue to multiply. They cease to live as a functioning part of your body and degenerate to become cancer cells, not performing any function other than to survive and multiply. As a tumor develops and grows, oxygen levels become lower, making the cancer more aggressive.

What Can We Do

Following a series of break through studies into the benefits of oxygenation, more clinical trials are being led to look into the ability of high oxygen levels to inhibit cancer growth. When presented with high oxygen levels, particularly at an increased temperature, cancer cells produce high levels of acid. This leads to nutrient deficiency and the destruction of the cell’s metabolic process, which, in turn, results in apoptosis (cell death) of tumor cells.
